This month I added my 30,000th song to iTunes...and I only keep songs I've rated at least 3 stars out of 5. Though I've only shared a subset of my discography with you, I've finally shared all the stuff I really wanted you to hear: Stuff I own "hard copies" of from the 90s that you may not have heard before or found elsewhere. YSKOD has been going steady since December 2006, except for a lull from May to July 2007 when I smashed the shit out of my elbow (my left arm is now permanently bent like a tone arm), but this marks my 236th and final post. Thanks to all the bands for making the music I've posted here, thanks to the labels for being smart or stupid enough to release it, thanks to my wife for allowing me to fritter away Saturday afternoons posting it, and thanks to everyone out there who stopped by. Bye.

Veronica Lake - Their Complete Discography

Here is the debut Toshack Highway album from Adam Franklin, released on Catapult Records in 2000, after the rightly lamented demise of the Swervedriver. The album is all over the shop (in a good way), and for me the standouts are "Harlem", "I Thought I Saw My Ship A-Coming", and "Sisyphus". I haven't seen this album posted on many blogs, so I thought a few folks out there might be happy to run across it here.

Tangible Records 7" Box Set

If you search for "Tangible" on YSKOD you'll see that I've posted most all of the six 7" singles from this box set in the past. Here's how I "laid it down" in one of those posts...

Back in 1993, Tangible and Bomp! records co-released an amazing box set of six 7"s by San-Fran-area bands Hollowbody, Orange, Nebtwister, Acid, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Reverb. Only 500 copies of the box set were made, and mine is #235 (though the 7"s were sold separately too). The box set came with Issue No. 1 of "The Brian Jonestown Blotter", written anonymously in Church-of-the-Subgenius style, which documents the San-Fran music scene from which BJM emerged. Over time, as the alphabet and my discography allow, I will share some of the songs from this box set with you.

The Summer Hits - Beaches and Canyons CD

Thanks to a reader comment, I learned about this hard-to-find 16-song compilation of The Summer Hits 1992-96 output, released on Christmas Records in ~1996. Rad California-style Beach-Boys-on-Shrooms indie rock by a band that was Further, then splintered off into Beechwood Sparks, The Tyde, etc. I found a sleeveless copy for $3 at CD BBQ and am sharing it with you, so get your Dig! on! Hope you can make out the manifesto on the CD.

I have California-era Rena to thank for introducing me to the Sublime Submarine, whose two albums deserve to be heard by every Pablo Honey Powered Indie Rock Fan out there. These are the 1994 versions of their self-titled album (Ultimate Records) and KMTYEBO (Fantastik! Records). Masterful melancholia, both. As the band says, "I'd rather feel bad, than feel nothing at all." Lost love? Bad day? Look no further. Here's your ticket to wallow and/or transcend.

SpinART's third release, a six pack of coloured 7"s by Poole, Throw That Beat In The Garbagecan, Trampoline, Swirl, Veronica Lake, and Suddenly Tammy!, in a popsicle box containing toys and candy, in a limited edition of 1500, solidified them as stone cold cool indie kids in 1992, and caused those who grabbed a copy to feel they were stone cold cool indie kids too. Hard not to covet and feel chuffed about owning something as fun and ephemeral as this.

Sons of Freedom - Sons of Freedom CD

I discovered this 1988 album through my high school buddy Jo Johnson. It was our staple summertime weekend album which we played loudly on his ghetto blaster up at Winnipeg Beach. We were able to buy 2 litre plastic bottles of Canada Cooler from the liquor vendor there (7% alcohol for $7), tear off the label, and drink them right on the beach--the vendor staff pretending we were of legal drinking age, and us pretending we were drinking 7 up. So, this is a nostalgia post. Sons of Freedom were a Vancouver-based band, and their debut on Slash Records is a monster of chunky rock riffs, odd lyrics, and non-conventional song structures. Not to everyone's taste perhaps, but I am willing to claim that this album is one of the most original Canadian rock records of all time. I dedicate this post, and the cover quote (by early "Valiant Five" feminist Nellie McClung) in particular, to Spinster Rock's Nolan Micron who is thinking of shutting down his wonderful blog due to The Man.

The title and cover from this 1993 compilation on London's Frog Records pay homage to this Big Black album. Appropriately enough for a Friday the 13th, it contains 13 songs by Animals That Swim, Frantic Spiders, Spokepoker, Boyracer, Hula Hoop, Scissormen, Shiva Affect, Bleed, Johanna's House of Glamour, Bush Pilot, Wand, Thumper, and Helen Love. Far as I know there wasn't a Vol 2...though I would be happily wrong.

Smog - Floating 7" EP

Anudder band-in-name who made a Kuhnian paradigm shift in sound is Smog. Though some of you hopefully prefer Bill's dickaging around to his ubber-songsmithery, most of us will find ourselves loving "A River Ain't Too Much To Love" more than this 6-song Shinning that formed Smog's 1991 debut on Drag City. Regardless, this is still good stuff that, downloaded along with The Arizona Record below, will provide you with a fine half-hour escape from fidelity. I shall nose my discography!

If you enjoyed the low-fi Dime Map of the Reef 7" EP I posted here, then you'll want The Arizona Record too, an enjoyable 9-song mini-album released on Drag City in 1993 before D.C. Berman gave up recording through a ghetto blaster. It's taken me 15 years and several Jews albums to realize how much fun this album is, and given my disappointment in 2008's "Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea", The Arizona Record is no longer my least favourite Jews album. Party Bargers and Candy Jailers may not concur.

Sebadoh - Local Band Feel LP

A bootleg collection of live Sebadoh recordings from 1992-93 formed the debut release on the X-Mas label. The Earth, The Wind, and The Fire make a pretty dinny din here, though I tend to prefer Lou's introspective earth to Eric's kegger fire. Lots of each can be heard here to balance the universe. I missed the break between Cliche and 2 Years, 2 Days when hacking the soundwave into bits, but they work well back to back anyway.

Sebadoh - The Freed Weed CD

Homestead Records released this compendium of cassette recordings in 1990, consisting of the Weed Forestin songs from 86-87 and The Freed Man songs from 88--40 songs in all. Probably my favourite low-fi album of all time. Bob Pollard wasn't the only dude who could pull a catchy tune out his bottom, ya know.

Raw Energy - "On the Road" Compilation CD

A&M records released this Raw Energy label sampler of Canadian indie rock in 1993, featuring a comic strip called "On the Road". Sadly, even though the CD features the likes of Dinner is Ruined, Groovy Religion, HHead, King Cobb Steelie, The Imagineers, Jale, Cottage Industry, Yeti, Wooden Stars, Spool, Wining Dining & Drilling, Deadbeat Backbone, Eric's Trip, and Change of Heart, you should feel free to give it a miss unless you were a Canuck in Ontario or the East Coast at the time. The best of this bunch is below.

ROC - R.O.C. CD

ROC, those marvy mavericks, were destined to fail commercially from the get go. I can't think of another album that's as diverse in sound and style as this one while maintaining such a high level of quality and artistic integrity. They run the soundscape gamut from pop to rock to folk to punk to spoken word to electronica, yet somehow manage not to alienate the semi-dutiful listener across these 15 songs. Plus it's pretty damn hard to know what their band name is from the cover (ROC? R.O.C.?), and the band's not forthcoming about what it stands for. And the sleeve doesn't list the songs or nuthin. Based in the UK, they're still at it, though for me this album represents their most dynamic and interesting work. Karen Sheridan's monologue on Thirteen Summers is a treat, as is their cover of "Plastic Jesus" (from Cool Hand Luke). Released on Sentana in 1996.

I'm so grateful that Moscow Olympics have taken up the torch of creating consistently momentous indie pop songs; their new album "Cut the World" is astoundingly good. I haven't heard something as lovely and catchy since The Ropers, whose singles and compilation appearances I herein bequeath to you. The archive below contains all of the following goodies...

1. The 6-song Ropers CD EP from (Slumberland Records, 1994), which compiles 1993's Sunbathe and 1994's I Don't Mind 7" Slumberland singles, plus one extra track (September's Rain).
2. Both songs from the Why Popstars Can't Dance compilation double LP (Slumberland Records, 1994).
3. Boyracer/The Ropers tour 7" split (Slumberland Records, 1994).
4. The Ropers/The Tribbles 7" split (Brilliant Records/Giant Pool Balls, 1994).
5. Revolver/Transparent Day 7" (Slumberland Records, 1995).
6. Cover of The Cure's "Jumping Someone Else's Train" from Give Me The Cure: A Tribute to the Cure compilation CD (Radiopaque/Corduroy, 1995).

Did I miss anything? If you enjoy these songs, you should seek out their two full length albums too: All The Time (Slumberland, 1995), and The World Is Fire (Teenbeat, 1997). Neither captures the full glory of these early releases, but both albums are still very solid. My favourite Ropers song is Waiting for you below.

Pavement - Stray Slack LP

Here's a very enjoyable live Pavement bootleg LP released in 1993 on "Pseudo Indie Label". The full album name is Stray Slack: About As Valid As A Record Contract. The cut-and-paste collage work on the back cover features at least one disturbing pornographic image involving a rubber glove, a bum, and...urination...I think. Or perhaps I just need quite a bit of therapy. I'll let you be in my dream if I can be in yours. Haw. "Black Walls" (hear below) sounds like a cover. Is it? It's my favourite of the 17 songs on the LP.

Poem Rocket - Felix Culpa CD

NYC's Poem Rocket are one of my favourite unheralded noise/art rock bands. They released a number of singles in the mid-90s (see their site for a full discography) that were compiled on 1995's Felix Culpa (on PCP Entertainment). They've also released three albums to date, 1997's Infinite Retry on Parallel Time-out, 2000's Psychogeography, and, according to their new website, a double CD in 2007 called Invasion! that I plan to download from eMusic very soon. Poem Rocket create a lovely din, at times recalling Nation of Ulysses ("Eject"), Charalambides ("The Animal Planter"), Jessamine ("Contrail de l'Avion"), Hood ("Saint Sebastian's Halo"), Drugstore ("Pretty Baby"), and fellow NYers Bardo Pond ("Blue Chevy Impala").

Primal Scream - Sonic Flower Groove CD

I'm really not that savvy about indie esoterica. For instance, I only recently learned that OOP means "Out of Print". It's hard to believe that Primal Scream's fantastic debut album from 1987 is OOP. But it is; probably because it was released by Warner/WEA who are probably too busy releasing crappy crappy crap to reissue it. I was delighted to find it for $15 in a Toronto record shop a few years back. Terrible title aside, it's a beautiful jangle brit pop classic that I've not seen much around blogtown. Ten songs in 34 minutes. If you listen quickly you can hear it twice in an hour = time well spent.

Pyloric Waves - Compilation CD

D-Tox Records released this 19-song meat-and-plastic-Slinky-covered compilation of the burgeoning Chapel Hill indie music scene in 1992, featuring Well Nigh Forgotten, Picasso Trigger, Blue-Green Gods, Matt Malloy, Slowchange Madegascar, Polvo, Geezer Lake, Orifice, Vanilla Trainwreck, Toxic Popsicle, Boil, Shiny Beast, Camper Van Chadbourne, Eighthundred, Superchunk, Erectus Monotone, Bicycle Face, and bookended by the BORE-Radio-reminiscent Robert Delaney. I'm not sure what a Pyloric Wave is, but it may well have something to do with digestion. Was D-Tox trying to give us waves of nausea with this here US indie rock comp? Did they succeed? Best keep a few Rolaids handy just in case.

Goosepimples or goosebumps? As the fine sounds purveyed on this classic, classic comp pass through the tempanic membrane, indiepoppinfreshman and veterans alike can contemplate which term is more apt (less gross?). The star studded cast includes Swirlies, Suddenly Tammy!, Lorelei, Veronica Lake, The Magnetic Fields, White Town, Honey Bunch, Swirl, Our American Cousins, Tree Fort Angst, Crayon, Jane Pow, Whorl, Small Factory, Velocity Girl, Courtney Love, Lilys, Black Tambourine, and Wimp Factor 14. Seriously. All on one hunk of aluminum, thanks to SpinArt's debut CD release from 1992.

Orange - Orange CD

I recently stumbled across a rare copy of Orange's self-titled (hence virtually unsearchable) CD at CD BBQ, hence I only have the CD and no cover, hence I'm not awkwardly holding the cover in front of my Mac's photo booth camera for once. I don't really understand CD BBQ logic. They don't send you the damn sleeve...but how much do they weigh, really, and how much space do they take up on their shelves? The good news is that thanks to them, you can now download their only full-length album, released on Dewdrops in 1994. Highly recommended for fans of Cocteau Twins, Alison's Halo, and their ilk. The singer's voice is sweet, not syrupy, and there's some great shoegaze guitar flourishes that Slowdivers will relish all the way down to the bottom of the soundpool. Includes "Feijoa" which I posted earlier from the Tangible Box Set to a rave review or two. More bonus: the archive includes Orange's cover of The Pixies' "Gigantic" from 1993's Thurtene: A Tribute to 4AD. Prepare to swoon.

The Nightblooms - The Nightblooms CD/Never Dream at All EP

You could tell me this Nightblooms CD was made in 1986 or in 2006 and I'd believe you...if I didn't know better. The truth, as it so often does, lies somewhere in between. Released in 1992 on Paperhouse Records, this truly timeless indie rock/shoegaze album should be as revered as MBV's Isn't Anything or at least as Lilys' In The Presence Of Nothing. Butitaintso. Instead, this criminally ignored Dutch band is perennially trapped somewhere in between Anything and Nothing. They have one of the weest wikis you ever did see: see! Very sad. Please don't pass this by.

Excellent and rare hand-numbered 20-song compilation released by Germany's Pearl Fanzine in 1993, featuring Antiseptic Beauty, The Tony Head Experience, Lorelei, Red Letter Day, Flowerpornoes, Usura, Mosaic Eyes, Ecstasy of Saint Theresa, Die Regierung, Eva Luna, Acid House Kings, Adam Met Karl, Die Sterne, 18th Dye, U Thant, Hip Young Things, Des Garcons Ordinaires, Lucievacarme, Die Allwissende Billardkugel, and Fflaps. It certainly inspired me to get busy knowing some of these bands' discographies. Lots of pleasant surprises here.

Lilys - A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns 10" EP

Stunning 6-song EP by a band (Kurt Heasley) at the absolute height of their (his) powers. "Ginger" was one of the first indie rock songs to be used in a commercial (if you're feeling rank, Calvin Klein's CK-1 was the product...). Like most of the Lilys best releases, this isn't available on eMusic or iTunes, and it doesn't seem to be available on many blogs (or perhaps I haven't found the right ones). Released in 1994 on Spin Art and deserving of reissue.

Loop - The World In Your Eyes CD

If for some unknowable reason you don't have this Loop album, and the other handful of Loop albums, here's your chance to begin to make amends. Loop released both "The World In Your Eyes" and "Heaven's End" in 1987 and although both are spacey drone rock classics to be revered, to be sure, I particularly enjoy the sonic variety on this compilation ("Brittle Head Girl" and "Burning Prisma" are simply [inter]stellar). But...1988's "Fade Out" is by far and away their most mind-blowing sonic workout. I can't hear the opening of "Pulse" without getting goosebumps and hearing my inner voice say "Oh maaaaaan". Still...I'm posting this album because I run into it less often in bloggoworld. Check out a detailed Loop discography here. My version of this CD was released on Loop's own Reactor Records label. I read an article in which Robert Hampson said he was thinking about reissuing all the Loop albums at their 20th anniversaries. Perhaps he changed his mind. Pity.

Here's a great quote about Loop from the CBC's Brave New Waves profile of Loop from April 17, 1993 (which I recently converted from tape to mp3): "Loop stands for fetishistic fascination with dense walls of texture and trademark one part songs. Songs whose internal logic is based on mood and shift, and songs that, generally, require a fade out. Loop forbids solos of any kind. Loop are to music what the never ending, always changing Mandelbrot set is to quantum physics. This is a Croydon based quartet...destined I guess to be appreciated only in their absence. Kepler - Fuck Fight Fail CD

Under appreciated band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, who broke up in 2006. FFF is more consistently pleasing than their 1999 EP "This Heart is Painted On", but musicianshipwise, they hit full stride on 2001's full lengther "Missionless Days". FFF is no slouch, mind. It's a solid effort that should appeal to fans of Trees-lounge-soundtrack-era Hayden, Slint, Mogwai, and Hypatia Lake, who enjoy hushed (but worth trying to make out) vocals, plenty of bass, and quiet-loud-quiet rocksercise ("The Changing Light At Sandover" is a great example of all of the above). Released in 2000 on Troubleman Unlimited.

Totally fun 21-song "international compilation of rock & fucking roll!" released on Four Letter Words in 1994, featuring The Summer Hits, Cat's Miaow, Starstreamer, Belmondo, Holiday Flyer, Orange Cake Mix, Tricycle Popstar, and Boyracer. "Total running time: 15 fucking hours". "Part one of HOT DOG! We've Got A Wiener!". Part two was supposed to appear on Somersault Records...but I don't think it ever did. The sleeve design was done by our old friend and sometimes mailer Chip Porter, and the insert features Tim Sendra of Veronica Lake and Madison Electric fame supine in front of his records wearing an MC5 shirt. All that plus Boyracer covering Henry's Dress. How can you go wrong?

Good Horsey - All their 7"s, I think

Thanks to Martijn's supersale, I doubled my collection of Good Horsey 7" singles today, and just in a nick of alphabetical time. Vancouver's Good Horsey was Mark Szabo, Max Lee, and Justice Schanfarber (until Justice left to form Pork Queen). Three of the four 7"s I'm sharing with you today were released on Vancouver's Trackshun Industries label (run by Justice), including 1994's Go Light EP, a 6-song Trackshun compilation from 1994 (Bugskull, Noggin, Pork Queen, Paste, Good Horsey, and Roughage...all in the archive) called "Optional Ingredients From A Vile Recipe", and 1996's Emperor Nick/Pink Pages. The fourth, The Last Customer EP, was co-released by Shrimper, 18 Wheeler, and Baby Huey in 1995. I've sung the praises of Good Horsey on YSKOD before. "Go Light" is one of the best indie rock songs I've ever heard, and though their discography is uneven, it's been a joy to discover. Hearing three Good Horsey songs I'd never heard before certainly made my day today. As exciting as when I plopped the Go Light single on my turntable (golly) 14 years ago.

Because even Google has a hard time crawling its way to info about Mark and Good Horsey, I'll let you know that what's in the zip file here, plus the Kazue CD below, represents a good chunk of (Good) Horsey's releases, but there's still lots more out there...somewhere. For example, the Trackshun Industries catalog mentions a 7-song self-titled cassette as "Horsey" (TR03). And I also found reference to a 1994 cassette compilation on Chocolate Monk called "The International Audio Journal Of Green Tea Consumption" (Choc.63) that apparently contains a Good Horsey song. As a solo artist (with Max Lee) Mark Szabo released (as the search-engine unfriendly "Mark") a full-length CD (Chocolate Covered Bad Things, still available on Catsup Plate here, though there are only 1,000 copies), at least two tapes (1994's Regressing, on Union Pole, is the second one, the liner notes of which make reference to an earlier unidentified "Mark" tape), and he has contributed songs to a number of compilations (tune in later...). Then there's the impossible-to-find Capozzi Park album "The Record Of Capozzi Park" from 2001, and the 1992 double-7" side-project Thee Crusaders, with AC Newman and others. In 2007, Heartbreak Scene released a terrific CD on Fayettenam Records called "The Szabo Songbook" featuring Mark's songs, which you can buy here. The only interview with Mark I found on the web was with Discorder, after he sorta dropped off the fringes of the music scene...but if you can believe it, the page no longer loads. Despite being heralded by the likes of Dan Bejar, Franklin Bruno, John Darnielle, and now me (haw), it seems Mark Szabo is destined to remain obscure. Probably for the best eh.

Mark Szabo and Alexander Keiths have one thing in common: Those who like them, like them a lot. A brilliant, lost album, released on Trackshun Industries in 1994. Apparently Mark played guitar upside down...but he left the strings alone...which in part explains the unique guitar sound. I'll stop just short of begging you to download this album.

From the insert: "Bela Koe-Krompecher's 26th birthday party at Stache's in Columbus, Ohio, June 18, 1994. The party actually started at 3:00 pm in Bela's backyard. Kegs were flowing, and Pete Jamison manned the grill, while Bela's grandmother, beer in hand, presided over the whole affair from a lazy boy in the middle of the yard. Records were traded, lies were told, and perception was severly impaired. Around 10:00 pm the party went modile, stumbling a few blocks away to Stache's. The drink of choice was Rolling Rock, and before GBV took the stage, at least one band member caught a nap."

Classic GBV live set, 25 songs in all, released as a bootleg in 500 copies on Lo-Fi Recordings in 1994. As a GBV fan in the mid 90s, I especially enjoy Bob Pollard's opening thanks (before launching into Postal Blowfish), which end with the following: "...we'd like to thank this dude here that knows all Guided By Voices Songs...and he owns all Guided By Voices records...he is one of the chosen few". We accept you! We accept you! One of us! One of us! Gooble gobble, gooble gobble! One of us! One of us!

"Speaking of wilfully obscure, California's Further proffers the paradigm case. If you're a fan of skronky, sloppy indie rock a la early Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, and Pavement, well then this may be your Golden Grimes ticket to Glory. The shortish story is that members of Further started off in Shadowland who released two dismal "alternative" albums on Geffen. Disenfranchised with their experience on a major, Brent and Darren Rademaker formed Further, who released four albums and handfuls of singles (as evidenced by their discography) of liberatingly unrestricted indie rock. Rarely critics darlings, Further were often chided for sounding like the bands listed above, thus spawning the excellently tongue-in-cheek song "Furtherdoh Jr-Q" provided below. After the band broke up in the late 90s, Brent joined Beachwood Sparks and Darren joined The Tyde. Sometimes Chimes is a double LP released on Christmas Records in 1993. It is out of print and fetches a pretty penny on eBay. There are 27 songs here, clocking in at 1.3 hours, and by my count, it's 20 songs too long (though it's an admirable excess as it is). So I've handpicked a fine EP's worth of True Indie Rock songs. For more background on the band, check out this and that."

Probably the most consistently mind blowing 13-minutes of shoegazing you are likely to hear this side of 1991's Loveless. The Czech band released this criminally short 3-song EP on Free Records in 1993, before packing up their guitars and effects pedals and turning electronic. Their Pigment (1991) and Sensurrate (1992) albums are definitely worth tracking down too.

I was woozy with anticipation when I received this Free Records CD in the mail back in 1994. I was awestruck by their 1993 Fluidtrance Centauri EP (look up) and here was an overpriced, import-only full-lengther! Hot damn...to plain damn. I was so disappointed by it...guitars replaced with bleeps and bloops and wind sounds...and bird calls? Huh? I still lament EofST's paradigm shift when they were at the height of their powers, but I don't hate this album. In fact, it's a very compelling listen. I particularly enjoy it when I'm sick, after ingesting lots of cold meds. Makes me feel pretty spaced out and, well, better (if not ecstatic). Gorgeous packaging too...it's not often that CD artwork rivals album artwork.

Evie - Evie CD

This may well be the best indie pop/rock album I will ever post on YSKOD of which I am confident none of you have ever heard. Hailing from the small town of Swan River in Manitoba, Canada, Evie (husband and wife duo Rosie and Al, now joined by Jawn) began as a seemingly intentional Eric's Trip copycat in 1996. They've released an armful of homerecorded 4-track cassettes over the years, many of which are apparently still available in that format or on CD-Rs from their website (although I'd contact them first to make sure). In 2001, they self-released this THIRTY song CD, which I picked up for $10 their awesome CD launch at the lovely, rundown, and now sadly soon-to-be-defunct Royal Albert Arms hotel in their new hometown (my old hometown) of Winnipeg. The CD consists of "older 4-track stuff from previous tapes and some re-recorded on a digital 8-track." Do you like Eric's Trip? Elevator (To Hell)? Do you like Slumberland-records style indie pop? Black Tambourine? The Cannannes? What about recent artists like Herman Dune? You do? Whew. You had me scared for a moment there. Well, then, dear sirs and madams, do yourself a favour and check this out.

Daniel - S. CD

Daniel Gugins, where are you now?
And hey, did you ever get over that “S.”?

At the time Daniel Gugins unleashed his self-released CD “S.” on an unsuspecting and deeply uninterested world (circa 1999) he was working for Slimline Sunrooms in my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In fact, he was building a sunroom in my dad’s house. He gave my pop a copy of “S.” which, upon hearing, I promptly pilfered. Like that other musical oddball of the same first name, Gugins is obsessed with a particular woman who serves as a bottomless muse for his over-the-top home-recorded homages. There are also a few differences between the two. Johnston is a troubled genius. Gugins…is not. Gugins wears jean shirts embossed with the Slimline logo. Johnston…has likely not. But I’m telling you, this “S.”, it’s a truly great pop album. It’s all handcrafted. Like a sunroom. And it unselfconsciously conveys his love for a woman who obviously could not, even with great effort, get any more over him. Like a sunroom. And whoo boy, that Gugins can cobble together a chorus of choice cliché! But this is pop music, and somehow, don’t ask me how, I don’t even want to know how…it works. It really works. You will laugh at Daniel Gugins. You will feel sorry for Daniel Gugins (or at least be awed by his cringe-inducing lack of self-insight). You will tap your feet and bob your head. You will also help me make Daniel Gugins very slightly semi-famous so he can bring sunshine into the darkest corners of everyone’s houses. If you please: Go forth, download, and Guginsify. Then help me spread the Gospel of Gugins. Hallelujah and Fiat Lux.

Dixie's Death Pool - Beauty Sleep CD

In 1995 I left Winnipeg for Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island. A generous trade. The Victoria music scene was surprisingly vibrant for a city of 300,000...particularly in the alt-country vein. One of the biggest buzzes was Dixie's Death Pool, a fairly aptly named band, led by the oft-mother-of-pearl buttoned scenester Lee Hutzulak. DDP shows at Thursday's pub were always filled with anticipation as the band took forever to set up their gear and then took forever to take the stage. Truth be told, I found DDP a rather frustrating band to listen to live. Just when a song finally started building into something wonderful it would derail into an abstract oblivion and never return. I imagine that was entirely the point, but after too many teases I find I tend toward teleology. When they finally got around to settling on versions of their songs for their self-released 1999 debut album "Beauty Sleep" I was anticipating something magical. I was disappointed again. Lots of interesting spooky/cool moments and well worth a listen, but too many of the songs fall apart without creating the desired "sinister buzz." Let me know if you think I missed the deep end of this pool.

The Dudes - This Guy's The Limit CD

Winnipeg, Victoria, Calgary...the wee arc of my Western Canadian life brings us to The Dudes, whose timeless debut album demands an exception to my pre-2000 rule. "This Guy's The Limit" (a mondegreen you'll appreciate if you try telling someone about this album...which you should) was recorded at least in part in the kitchen of "Rock Central", a grand old house in Calgary's Victoria Park seedy/industrial core that was home to many local musicians and host to many free SPAM and pancake and backyard concert Stampede Breakfast extravaganzas. The CD was self-released in 2002 on Moustache Wax Records. You shall find a willing slot for it between your "Early Mouse" and "Jr". You shall note that The Dudes are funny and charming, but the most important fact about them will be self-evident: They rock. Rock Central was recently torn down in Calgary's quest for 100% gentrification. It's been a while since I've seen the Dude Bombs, those blimpheaded do-gooders who join the band on stage for a few minutes of crowd riling per show, but according to their website, they're still active. So, if you like this album, be sure to track down 2003's Beepuncher EP and 2006's Brain Heart Guitar full-length to hear more Dudes songs plus reworkings of some of these Calgary Classics.

Charalambides - Union LP

Only 500 copies of Charalambides' debut LP were released on Siltbreeze in 1994. According to one interview with Tom and Christina Carter it was never re-released on vinyl or CD because the master tapes were lost. The music and the handmade sleeves are both wonderful works of folk art. There was no insert with my copy at least, and no information other than the song titles on the back cover. Perfect; that's all I needed to know. The album opens with my favourite Charalambides song--Florian--11+ minutes of shimmering, gentle waves of distorted guitar that, more than almost any other song in my discography, warrants use of the word "transcendent". A brief reprise of the same song completes this Union. In between you'll find five unique and original indie-folk songs perfect for listening to as you watch dust motes drifting across a sunny room, curtains curling near an open window, the cat licking its paws. Time doesn't so much stand still as it ceases to be relevant while the tone arm eases its way across this lovely artifact.

Charalambides - Market Square 2 x LP

A year after Union, in 1995, the lumbering beast that is Market Square was unveiled on Siltbreeze. A much darker affair than Union, the double LP begins with a harrowing message left on Tom and Christina's answering machine from a guy threatening to kill himself if someone didn't pick up the phone. A guy who had the wrong number and who did not leave his phone number. Yeesh. There are some gentle moments here too, but overall it's an emotionally draining, uneasy, and sometimes frightening 90 minutes. According to the web interview I read, it was never released on CD because it's too long. But surely it could be broken into 2 CDs given that it was as 2 LP set. Perhaps the real reason is they are as afraid of this album as I am.

The Cannanes - A Love Affair With Nature LP

One of the most underrated bands in my discography, I was chuffed to see Australia's The Cannanes live at The Hopetoun Hotel in Sydney in 2006. This lovely LP was self-released in 1989, re-released on white vinyl in 1991 on Feel Good All Over, and re-re-released on CD by Ajax in 1995 with no less than 14 bonus tracks, which I have yet to hear. Ah, redemption songs. I bought and rashly sold this Boyracer CD back in the day, then rebought a copy of it last year at Calgary's Hot Wax Records for $7.95, as the perspicacious can deign. A bargain. Some critics panned this full-length for being overly long and/or for petering out at the mid-way point, but with 21 tracks in 43 minutes you can afford to job the skip/delete button at will and still have time for tea before toast. As was Boyracer's forte, the ratio of catchy indie-rock winners to losers on this 1996 Zero Hour release seems quite high to me.

Damn that's good. So's this. The other Blaise Pascal--the one-time Vancouver-based indie rock band--showed lots of promise on these two self-released CDs (5-song EP from 1993, 8-song mini-LP from 1994), but they quickly faded from obscurity into further obscurity. Speaking of which, they sound kinda like a seriouser Further...or a moodier Pavement.

Analogue - 5 Demos

Back in the day, a guy in Chapel Hill made me a swell mix tape of North Carolina bands (including Kitchen Puff's Polvo double 7") just cos. Gosh that was nice of him. And all he got out of it was spreading good music around. Imagine! Just ahead of Polvo he taped me 5 demo songs from his own band, Analogue. I told him I really liked his band, and fortunately it was not a lie. Concrete indie rock tripping over loose Pavement. "Bleacher" bemuses my inner thrasher, but "Croon", "Technical Serv.", "Endurance Test", and "Pets de Westlake" (which opens with some decent coughing) are original and compelling. Analogue went on to release at least one 7" record (previously featured here). These are the only demos I plan to post on YSKOD, so humour me and give them a demo, won't you?

Sacrament mimicked via aluminium format! A compilation of Now Sounds, a 16 suite of them no less, from this Durham, North Carolina label, released in 1994. Though it collects a veritable who's who of indie rock, overall I find it a so-so set. The only standouts for me are Crayon, Butterglory, and Spatula. Rounding (and in some cases grounding) out this comp are The Dambuilders, Archers of Loaf, Versus, Unwound, Grifters, Nothing Painted Blue, Small 23, Diskothi-Q, Blaise Pascal, Spent, Portastatic, Further, and Refrigerator. Mix Tape Field Day

And now for something completely related (and thanks for all the yeses).

In December I bought an iMic and introduced my iMac to a top-end Denon cassette tape deck that I found on top of a dumpster a few years back. The two got along marvelously, despite their differences. They allowed me to convert a box of old cassettes to mp3, and some of the fruits of this labour will be shared with you in the weeks ahead. Most of the cassettes I converted were originals, but I did convert a few mixed tapes of songs from 7"s and CDs that were once part of my collection but alas, were (in most cases) foolishly traded away. My discography would have been roughly three times the size had I clung on to everything I bought back in the day, but I couldn't afford to expand without some contraction. I've since re bought, and sometimes resold again, several of those albums, but some of the more obscure stuff has never crossed my path again, lamentably (waah! I want my Crayons back!). Fortunately, I taped some of those songs before trading (using a lower-end tape deck, mind), and most of the recordings sound surprisingly good in mp3 format.

So, this week I'm gonna share with you a whole mess of mp3s from four mix tapes made in 1994-5: three that I made myself and one mystery mix tape with no labels that some nice bloke made for me, which I need *your help* to demystify. So off we go. For the completists on the bus, I've tracked down the releases for most of the songs and have noted them in the comments field; corrections and anecdotes welcomed.

I've got a few more record singles/EPs left, but not enough to make another round viable. Of course, I also have a few vinyl LPs, some cassette-only stuff I've recently converted to mp3, plus a heap of out-of-print CDs. Will you still visit if I start sharing stuff in all three formats? I'll probably just post archives, not direct mp3 links, cos posting both doubles the timesuck and I can't stay flush with bandwidth anyway (and FileDen are rage inducingly bad communicators). White Come Come - The Broken Bird 12" EP

Four song Japanese shoegaze masterpiece by the essentially one-off White Come Come, released on Sugarfrost in 1992. Amazingly, you can buy it from tonevendor for very few US dollars if you hurry here. I re-recorded this EP at 33 RPM -10% pitch to lessen the sibilance, and then readjusted the speed in Audacity. And by golly, it nearly worked. Enjoy.

Whorl - Both Slumberland 7" singles

Whorl weren't exactly prolific. They have at least 3 compilation tracks in addition to the four songs spread across their two Slumberland singles from 1990 and 1992. "Mind Revolution" is pretty darn Godfleshy for Slumberland. "Stupid Shit" seems like a post-Godfleshy band aping The Fall. Both songs are quite good. And then, a mere two years later, Whorl sounds a bit Chapterhousey on "Christmas" and then beats The Fall at their own game with the repetitious and absolutely sublime "Maybe It's Better". An intriguing mystery band.

Sabine - A (Complete?) Discography

I hope Christopher (a.k.a. Chip, a.k.a. CP) Porter won't mind that I'm sharing my (complete?) set of Sabine singles with you this week. There's really nothing on the dang WWW about Sabine, which is appropriate for Sabine's otherwordly longing-and-lovely spacerock. In addition to escaping fame with Sabine, CP dodged the popularity bullet as a member of Veronica Lake, as the owner of Audrey's Diary, and as the editor of Emily's Hip Pocket zine...making him just the sort of unscathed Rambo record collectors like me like to whip out to try to wow a virtual crowd (three's a crowd, right you two?). Here's what goodies are in store for you:

Sabine's debut "Painting Portraits" from a 1991 split-flexi with Boyracer (Wurlitzer Jukebox) is an incredibly beautiful lost gem. Motifs of the Field Mice, Famous Boyfriend, set to a Casiotone (For The Painfully Alone) beat.

1993 also saw the release of "Kometen Melodies: A Compilation of Mellifluent Space Rock. Vol 1" on CP's own Audrey's Diary label. This 7" features four instrumentals: two from Sabine ("Marra" and "Meknes") and two from Thumbling (including the massively good "Butterfield Eight"). Shame this did not grow into a series.

The lone 1994 Sabine release was part of a special issue of CP's zine Emily's Hip Pocket (the 7th and last issue, and the first to feature a 7") released by Audrey's Diary. The issue consisted largely of interviews with Bark Psychosis and Labradford and the 7" featured the Veronica-Lake-styled "I'm Ready To Start Fire To Everything" from Sabine, a Buddha on the Moon tune, and the awesome "Reflections" by Jessamine.

The lone 1995 Sabine release was a cover of "Dancing Gods" for a Silver Apples 10" tribute (Enraptured Records) which also included covers by Flowchart, Scaredycat, Third Eye Foundation, and Windy & Carl. Only 1,000 copies were made and quickly sold. A CD version was subsequently released featuring more covers and more bands.

Finally, in 1996 Sabine (now a full band) finally got a slab of vinyl all to herself on their excellent "Serf to the Level of the Lord/A Rocket is a Drum" 7" (Wurlizter Jukebox).

The Ropers - Their three vinyl-only songs

The Ropers were a terrific mid-90s indie pop band whose discography you can get to know here (this discography missed the cover of "Jumping Someone Else's Train" they did for a Cure tribute album that I'd love to hear hint hint post post link link in in comments comments). Two of their early 7"s were re-released on a self-titled CD EP (1994, Slumberland Records). They also released two full length albums: 1995's All The Time (which you can still buy from Slumberland Records), and 1997's The World on Fire (on Teenbeat Records, and is available for download on eMusic). Though they've been releasing well-received records since 1993, here's a band who've managed to remain enigmatic and encapsulated within the Purple Ivy Shadows of their own making (here's a link to one of their unmaintained/expired web pages). This Providence, Rhode Island collective straddled too many pigeonholes to find themselves bathed in any limelight. After all, how many shoegazey indie pop/rock/jazz alt-country bands do YOU know...and like? You can hear them metamorphosize from one mysterious genre to another across their three 7" singles: 1993's E.P. on My Pal God (less the jazzy song "e.h."), 1994's Circle Eye/Psychic Baby on Spin Art, and 1996's Feeble/Substance on Zero Hour. Their EPs and albums are also worth seeking out.

Guided By Voices/The Grifters 7"

Four short snappers from GBV (Hey, Mr. Soundman; Announcers & Umpires; Evil Speaker B; Uncle Dave) and one potent potable from The Grifters (I'm Drunk) constitute this split 7" released on Chapel Hill's The Now Sound label in 1994. Is it just me, or does "Uncle Dave" sound exactly like another vintage GBV song?

Early 5-song EP from short-lived cool-named avant-garde indie-rock band from Chapel Hill, NC. Released in 1991 on Merge Records. Not the highest batting average in the league, but when they hit full swing, they really belted it out of the park. And I don't enjoy baseball.

Sadly, Elevator's website is down, making me wonder if Rick White and his Canadian Crue's wonderful ouvre has finally reached the ground floor. Hope not. [Sic] title aside, here's a great song from a truly haunting EP, released on Sub Pop in 1994.
